The hotel accommodations were wonderful, especially the Hosteria Andaluza in Riobamba. I could have stayed there for the rest of my life! We loved traveling through areas of Ecuador we would not have seen if we had signed up for a typical tourist experience. Our guides Ricardo, Adeline, and Javier were fantastic and went out of their way to make us comfortable during the journey.
Our itinerary was changed due to unexpected eruptions in Cotopaxi that closed the national park. Tren Ecuador was extremely accommodating and came up with an alternate experience. We were taken by bus to Ibarra, in the north of Ecuador. From there we took a steam engine to Otavalo. Along the way, we had an indigenous music presentation, visited a workshop to see religious statues being made, visited a textile factory, and finally had lunch by San Pedro Lake.
It was a great day and completely made up for Cotopaxi. There were very few unhappy passengers on our train but here are some examples of people who didn't have an optimal experience.
When he was told the train didn't have cranberry juice since it was not common in Ecuador, he threw a fit. Every meal had to be made to his specifications.
This behavior repeated itself approximately once an hour for the whole journey and everyone on the train grew to dislike this individual and avoid him.
Remember we are in a different country. That's normal, they're kids. Consider leaving your small ones at home. This requires getting off of the train and getting onto the bus.
It was hard for them to participate in the excursions, even though most excursions occurred on flat ground. If your mobility is impaired to such an extreme level, you may miss out on the activities that occur off of the train. I took the Train from Quito to El Boliche which is a half day trip on the train and you return on the bus to Machachi a town that you visited earlier with the train..
As a train fan I would naturally enjoy the trip.. Brand new air conditioned carriages with big clean windows to enjoy the countryside.. It does not move fast and there is a commentary on what you are seeing from the helpful Train attendants.. You stop at some small places for about 20 minutes where you can enjoy a coffee ,some local food or listen to some music played by a local band..
At El Boliche last stop you can take a short walk in the park see some Llamas before getting on the bus for the short trip to the Lunch destination. Lunch was of good quality and in a lovely setting with domestic and wild animals to see..
Ostrich,Goats,Belgian Horse who is not very friendly! The stay here is probably a half an hour too long.. You return in the bus and are in Quito by 5pm - very enjoyable - Go!! We went on the train and it was amazing, we took it from Cotopaxi and we stop at a few pit stops on the way. Out train guide was a pleasant girl and always happy. I have lived in Ecuador for 5 years and never went on the train and it was amazing, I would recommend this to very one.
Make sure you sit close up to the front if you want to hear the tour guide. Take this as part of the package, you set off from the train station on bus, which takes you to breakfast, then to the Cotopaxi mountain and then on the train back to the station, make sure you are not in a hurry because it is a full day excursion. Over priced the hotels are hostels that are really old and in the middle of no-where!
You spend more time on the bus than on a train! We were herded like cattle everywhere! You are better off getting a taxi and touring the little cities! Food is horrible too! I tried to do my booking online but I was unable to do it ,so i decided to contact them with emails. And fortunately i was able to reserve a ticket without giving my credit card details.
